Keeping your floof in mind.
An animal lover’s Yardtopia must include places for pets to romp and explore. But don’t sacrifice style for your four-legged best friend.
Dedicate open areas for your dog to run, fetch and relax with you. Consider mulch or gravel for areas your dog loves to patrol. For landscaped areas you want to protect, install low fencing that matches your yard’s aesthetics.
If your dog is a digger, provide an area such as a sandbox where he can let loose — while keeping the rest of your yard pristine.
Choose hardy plants that can withstand being pawed around, and use nontoxic plants to keep your fluffy friends safe. Popular fruits, flowers and herbs — such as daisies, parsley, and tomatoes — can wreak havoc on a dog’s system. If you do grow toxic plants, keep them in raised garden beds and areas inaccessible to your pet.
To avoid ugly yellow patches on your grass from your pup’s daily business, install an alternate groundcover such as yarrow, silver carpet, elfin thyme or kurapia. Unlike grass, these covers won’t discolor and require little to no mowing.
