Make your outdoor space pop with native wildflowers in seasonal hues of yellow, orange and pink.
Springtime is known for rebirth and renewal — and, of course, flowers in bloom. This can be an ideal time to plant flowers in your own yard, when temperatures are mild and plants can establish before the hotter summer months.
If you’ve been itching to add some bold blooms to your garden, let the colors of spring be your inspiration! Consider native wildflowers in vibrant yellows, eye-catching oranges and pastel pinks to reap the benefits of these beautiful, low-maintenance and resilient plants.
Here are a few of our favorite blooms that will put a spring in your step outdoors this season.
Yellow
- Bush sunflower (California encelia): Bush sunflower is a colorful, fast-growing shrub that is very easy to grow, making it a great choice for beginning gardeners. It grows best in full sun, needs very little water and does well in different soil types.
- Common deerweed (Acmispon glaber): Common deerweed produces small yellow flowers that turn orange-red as they age. Its slender stems and small leaves make it an ideal choice for naturalistic garden designs. It is drought-adapted and thrives in full sun.
Orange
- California poppy (Exchscholzia californica): You can’t go wrong with our California poppy! The state flower of California, this plant grows best in full sun but will tolerate part shade. It reaches one to two feet tall in height and is a very hardy plant. Known for its bright orange blooms, the flowers can also be yellow and will remain closed in cloudy weather.
Pink
- Common manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita): Common manzanita is a beautiful shrub that produces light pink lantern-shaped flowers. It is easy to grow in a variety of soils and requires low levels of moisture.
- Hummingbird sage (Salvia spathacea): This attractive sage has bold, bright pink flowers and a pleasant fragrance. It grows well in shade and part-shade and is drought-tolerant.
