Overhauling your yard is a big enough project to stress even the most Type A of us out. There can be so many factors to consider, budgets to ponder and time to invest, that getting started is often the hardest part. But it doesn’t have to be if you take it step by step.
Step 1: Envision
The first step is actually the easiest (and we think most fun!): simply imagine how you want to use your yard.
When you envision spending time in your backyard, what do see?
Are you hosting friends for a lively BBQ while broadcasting that weekend’s sports game on an outdoor screen?
Maybe you’re gardening with your kids or challenging them to a game of bocce ball?
Would a romantic date night outdoors with drinks around the firepit fill your cup?
Or perhaps you’re seeking more solitary time where you can meditate and practice yoga just a few steps outside your home.
Once you know where your heart lies when it comes to using your backyard, it’s easier to take action to bring your Yardtopia to life.
Step 2: Observe
Before you know what your yard could be, take a look at what it currently is. Inventory your space to ensure you’re setting yourself up for success before beginning renovation projects.
First, measure what you’re working with. For square or rectangular yards, multiply the length and width to get your total square footage. If your backyard has an irregular shape, divide it into smaller sections you can easily measure. Calculate the square footage of each section and then add those together to get your total square footage. This is an ideal to capture those “before photos” of your yard, as well.
Now, take a look at your space from a bird’s eye view. Try to section off spaces and carve out a use or activity for each area of your backyard. For example, plan to dedicate one corner for dining or lounging, a portion for a container garden, and the remainder as meditative open space. No matter your artistic skills, sketch this plan out. For the technically savvy, use design software to more precisely draw out what you’re envisioning.
Once you’re ready to hire contractors or seek advice from experts at nurseries, these sketches, photos and measurements will help ensure your vision comes to life just as you imagine.
Step 3: Implement
When first starting on your journey to the backyard of your dreams, consider your overall budget and time constraints. This can help you decide how much to take on at once, and whether you will hire a professional for help or chip away at projects DIY-style. There’s no right or wrong path to your perfect backyard retreat—the journey to Yardtopia should be as rewarding as the end result, so approach the process in a way that best aligns with your personality and lifestyle.
If your budget allows, share your ideas with a landscape architect who can help ensure they’re attractive and functional. When you’re ready to take action, you can hire a landscape contractor to put those plans in motion. You can also take advantage of free advice from experts at your local nursery or hardware stores.
